Gas Springs

Gas springs deliver full force from the very start of the stroke — something no mechanical spring can do — which is why modern forming dies rely on them.

What are gas springs?

A gas spring is a sealed cylinder charged with high-pressure nitrogen. Unlike a coil spring, force is high at initial contact and rises only modestly over stroke, giving a flatter force curve, and much higher force per unit of space. In dies they power strippers, pads and cam returns.

Types of gas springs

Standard gas springs

Self-contained charged cylinders in standard body diameters and strokes.

Compact / mini types

Short bodies for space-limited pads.

Linked systems

Multiple cylinders hosed to a control panel for equalised force and monitoring.

How to select gas springs

  • Initial force required and total at end of stroke.
  • Stroke length and closed height available in the tool.
  • Mounting style and port position.
  • Cycle rate and temperature — affects service interval.

Frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of a gas spring over a die spring?
A gas spring provides its full rated force from the first point of contact and keeps the force curve nearly flat over stroke, while a mechanical spring starts near zero and climbs. That means fewer, smaller force units and better-controlled forming pressure.
Are gas springs serviceable?
Yes — they are recharged or resealed at service intervals depending on cycles and operating temperature. Include your cycle rate in the enquiry and we can advise the right specification.
